We all know that NS bikes are know for dirt jumping and street riding, so without any doubt Surge bike frame is born super agile and take up aerial jumps with ease. It is also been firmly rooted to freeride hardtail genre with no surprise but what impresses the riders is how well this frame perform on both technical terrain and longer rides. Surge is an all-rounder mountain bike frame made with butted steel tubes. NS bike has really maintained good weight and designed nice geometry for Surge. It is very much a freeride hartail bike that gives greater stability down the hill. Many riders liked the simplicity of this frame. This steel bike frame has got fair bit of steeper seat tube angle that puts the body weight in the front directly over the cranks for optimum pedal efficiency. The frame is designed to take-up a fork up to 160 mm; you can set it up slacker like a Freeride or a Downhill bike to fly easily through technical sections.
An all-rounder bike frame
Surge is a lightweight do-it-all frame with clean and simple solid steel chassis. With minimal graphic company badge finish in the head tube and an elegant design on the down tube gives a classic look for the frame without loosing its dirt heritage. This mountain bike frame is not spotted with eclectic splash of colours but available with two colours such as black and white in both medium and large size. It is definitely a light weight frame than previous model and has better butted tube lines to create a neat-lined chassis. NS bike purposely made Surge with thin tubes to maintain low profile layout except the down tube which is overly sized. A head tube is kept simple in the front with short throat gusset capable of taking fork between 140mm – 160mm of travel. This makes the geometry of the frame more slacker suitable for freeride/hardtail ride.
Intuitive Frame with Flawless Design
The seat tube is thin enough to take up skinny seatpost and it flawlessly pass through the super low top tube for massive standover clearance. The chunky seatstay neatly welded on the top tube/seat tube interaction and nicely brace the rear end for lively experience on quick turns. The chainstay follows the same layout and forms an oval shape to provide necessary tyre clearance. The end of the chianstay is attached with the replaceable dropout. This bike frame comes with straight-through cabling system for smooth gear shifting. Overall frame built is simple and it would be stiffer, sometime you might feel the loss of subtleness the steel gives on the trail. We cannot say that the frame is overly built but strategically made tubing mostly satisfy various types of rides.
Easy to Ride
Ride the frame with suitable tyre and short travel fork, you will feel the frame quickly response to technical trail and lets you confidently chase the traction with repeated twist and turns. Its immediate reaction to the rear wheel traction for balancing the ride is quite impressive. Riding this bike is unlimited fun, twisting the tyres quickly on tight turns and turning the wide bar for balance on difficult trail with ease is how surge performs. The head tube angle is 66° and the seat tube angle is 70° which is not too slacker but do not expect the bike to climb up the mountain. The frame gives a tight feel irrespective of any components you set the bike with.
The riding quality keep improves each time when you ride the bike on technical singletrack. You can easily anticipate the difficult section on the trail in advance and feel the rear tyre slide and much of the fork twist. All these put together provides better experience on riding different terrain. It is easy to handle the bike through corners due to low profile layout and slacker head tube. Even though this steel bike frame is light weight It does not push you down while big landings. The steeper seat-tube fixed with skinny seat-post having a longer extension would give good comfort on saddle.
Preferable Bike Parts
Many riders have tried and succeeded building this mountain bike frame with suitable components that gives the desired riding style. Fixing Thomson twin bolt seat post, Thomson twin stem, wide bar, king headset, Nuke proof Generator hub are preferred choice of kit for such kind of frame. RS Pike with U Turn or a Manitou Minute 140mm gives full travel but needs adequate tuning and patience. Even Revolution comes in 150mm if you extend your budget. Hayes Stroker Disc Brakes also works well for all-rounder type of frame and for superior drivetrain performance Shimano SLX groupset suits well. Maxxis or Michelin tyres give predictable grip and never fail for safe landing.
Our Analysis
NS Bike Surge bike frame is cheap and reliable, fun to ride. It is one of the best mainframe from hardtail genre built to experience freeride in all kind of condition. Its dirt jumping heritage and hardtail hucking is an added advantage but yet comfortable for longer rides. This all-round bike frame is suitable for both single speed and with derailleur.
